T: The headline of our lesson is cinema and films, which are popular nowadays. Today we are to decide what influence on our opinion on the film. How do you get your own vision of the film?
No doubt, we can call the 20th century the century of film making. Cinema and TV films have become an important part of our lives. At our lesson we'll remember the history of cinematography, speak about different genres of films and how cinema influences people's life.
Hope you’ll be active, helpful and supportive in our today’s work. By the end of the lesson you’ll be able to write an assay about your favorite film.

Text “Cinema”
The first film show took place in Paris in Capuchin Boulevard, on December 8, 1896. So, cinema is 122 years old already.
The first one hundred spectators came to a little hall “cinematograph”, to watch a film about a train, coming to the railway station. Seeing that train on the screen the people rose and ran away.
The first film was made by brothers Lumier. They are considered to be the “fathers” – founders of the new kind of art. Some time passed before stories about people’s life appeared on the screen. They were of great popularity among audience.
And one of the first actors was a little mustachioed man in a black funny jacket and baggy trousers, in large long shoes and bowler. It was Charlie Chaplin – the great dumb – as people called him later. His brilliant acting make millions of people laugh though he never said a word.

T.: Im sure everybody likes films. You might know that Americans call films “movies”. There are a lot of movie genres. Let’s recollect some of them. So, what movie genres do you remember? (На дошці написані в стовпчик слова-назви жанрів фільмів):

Hollywood in Southern California is the movie capital of the world. Many films have been made there, and the genres, or kinds, have changed often.
From the early-to-mid 1930’s, movie-goers got a look at the people involved in crime and their violent activities by watching gangster movies. After all this violence, people needed to laugh, so from the mid –to-late 1930’s, comedies became very popular.
In the 1940’s, many detective movies about policemen who solved crimes were made. Then came musicals, in which the story was told in songs and dance.
Musicals were especially popular in the late ‘40’s and early ‘50’s, but the mid-fiftieth, this light-hearted genre was competing with films about more serious subjects. There was one kind that could be found throughout all of these eras, and that was the western, films about America’s cowboys, Indians and early settlers.
Since the early ‘60’s, movie-goers have had a variety of movies to choose from. There are, for example, horror movies about people who encounter frightening, unnatural situations. There are also serious films such as documentaries about events that have actually happened, and science fiction movies about possible future events and future worlds. Some people have also enjoyed watching psycho-dramas about the everyday problems that people have.
Of course, no list of films would be complete without animated movies, which tell stories through a series of colourful drawings. These are especially popular among children.

T: Have you recognized the movie? What is it? You’ll have a chance to see some scenes from the film which received 11 Oscars. ”. It was the record in the number of prizes for one film. Remember the plot of this film. Tell the story using the following plan after watching movie:

S1: The Titanic
The “Titanic” was the biggest ship in 1912. The captain and the engineers who had designed the Titanic were sure that it was absolutely safe and unsinkable. The ship was fantastic. It had to cross the Atlantic from Europe to America. First class passengers could have everything they wanted: lovely music delicious food, lots of entertainment, they felt relaxed and happy. Most of the third class passengers were immigrating to America. At midnight everybody on board heard a terrible sound. The Titanic hit an iceberg. The panic began. It was discovered that there were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers. The Titanic sank. The liner Carpathia rescued the people. MANY PEOPLE DIED.

S2: My favourite film is Titanic by James Cameron. It is a wonderful love story with a tragic ending. This film can be called a drama, a melodrama, and a catastrophe film.

S3: I saw this movie as well. Two young people met each other and loved each other during the first and the last voyage of Titanic. They were Jack and Rose. Hollywood stars Leonardo de Caprio and Kate Winslet played the roles of Jack and Rose.


S4: I’ve watched it several times already. All my girl-friends are absolutely mad about Titanic. The music impressed me greatly. I believe it is very important for understanding the idea of a film, the conception of a producer, it touches my soul.
S5: “Titanic” can be called the best film of the 20th century. Its prizes are 11 Oscars, 4 Golden Globes, and 2 MTV prizes. I think those people who have seen Titanic will never forget it.


S6: I find the work of a costume –designer absolutely brilliant and fascinating. The dresses and suites helped me to feel the atmosphere of that time vey deep.


S7: Watching this film I could feel that I was together with the actors. I lived through the tragedy. There were no useless scenes at all. The music was wonderful. The film was a great success.


S8: To my mind the acting is superb. The camerawork is fantastic, too. The special effects are in the service of the story. I really enjoyed it. I advise all my friends to see “Titanic”.
T: You have made a very important conclusion concerning cinema. You are right, cinema combines several art forms, producing the most life-like impression of reality. For example, music is very important for understanding the idea of a film, the conception of a producer, it touches our soul.

2.7 Reinforcement Cinquain / Закріплення вивченого матеріалу Сінквейн.
Правила для написання сінквейна наступні:
Перший рядок - одним словом, це іменник. Це тема сінквейна.
Другий рядок - два прикметники, які описують тему сінквейна.
Третій рядок - три дієслова, що описують дії, пов'язані з темою сінквейна.
